Travelling to the Veluwe with your dog? Discover why Hoenderloo is such a great base for walking, nature and a relaxing holiday with your dog.

The Veluwe is a wonderful destination to explore together with your dog. Vast forests, walking routes and plenty of nature make it easy to enjoy a different walk every day.

Hoenderloo is a great base for your stay. You’ll be right in the heart of the Veluwe, with various nature areas and places to visit within easy reach of the village.

But what should you keep in mind when visiting the Veluwe with your dog? Here are some of our tips.

1. Choose somewhere to stay close to the forest

When you’re on holiday with a dog, you soon realise how convenient it is when you don’t need the car every time you want to go for a walk.

The forest is approximately 200 metres from Het Veluwse Boshuisje. This makes it easy to head outside for a short walk in the morning and enjoy a longer walk later in the day.

Fancy another walk in the forest after dinner? No problem.

2. A fenced garden gives you extra peace of mind

After a long walk, you might simply want to sit on the terrace with a cup of coffee. It’s nice if your dog can enjoy being outside at the same time.

That’s why Het Veluwse Boshuisje has a fully fenced garden of approximately 55 m². The fence is around 1.30 metres high.

We notice that our guests with dogs really appreciate this. One guest even told us that their normally very anxious dog immediately relaxed and walked straight into the garden when they arrived.

3. Discover the forests around Hoenderloo

You don’t have to travel far from Hoenderloo to enjoy beautiful nature. The surrounding area consists of forests and other typical Veluwe landscapes, offering plenty of opportunities for walks together.

Especially if you’re staying for several days, it’s nice not to walk the same route every day. You could take a longer walk one day and enjoy a quiet stroll through the forest the next.

Of course, always pay attention to the local rules for dogs. Rules can vary between nature areas, and in some places dogs must be kept on a lead.

4. Visit De Hoge Veluwe National Park

De Hoge Veluwe National Park is close to Hoenderloo, and the Hoenderloo entrance is approximately 1.5 kilometres from Het Veluwse Boshuisje.

The park is a beautiful place for nature lovers, with forests, heathland and sand drifts.

Before your visit, always check the current rules for bringing dogs into the park and where your dog may need to be kept on a lead.

5. Make sure your dog gets enough rest too

With so much nature nearby, it’s tempting to walk for miles every day. But a holiday doesn’t have to become a walking competition.

After a long walk, a quiet afternoon at the holiday home can be just as enjoyable. Your dog can relax in the fenced garden while you unwind under the covered terrace or on the lounge furniture.

And the next morning, the forest will still be there waiting for you.

6. Bring familiar things from home

Every dog reacts differently to a new environment. Some feel at home immediately, while others need a little time to settle in.

Bringing their own bed, blanket or favourite toy can help make a holiday home feel familiar more quickly. And of course, don’t forget the lead, food and water bowls, enough food and any medication your dog may need.

For longer walks, it’s also a good idea to bring enough drinking water for your dog.

7. Find out where your dog is welcome

Even on holiday, you’ll probably want to go out for something to eat or find somewhere your dog can enjoy a good run off-leash.

Nearby, you’ll find Hondenbos Het Leesten: a fully fenced off-leash dog area of approximately 15 hectares. There is also the 3.1-kilometre Natte Neuzenroute, where dogs may also run off-leash provided they remain under proper control.

We have also personally contacted several restaurants in and around Hoenderloo to find out whether dogs are welcome and whether they’re allowed inside.
